  • Why only 10 in DIII National/USCHO Women's Ice Hockey Nat'l Polls :-(

    Wow!

Over 50 DIII Colleges and Universities offer Women's Ice Hockey, while there only 10 in the National Polls.

This is a DISGRACE and I hope that others will agree that USCHO and other pollsters will have at least 25 in the National polls next year.

There are 60 Division I men's programs, with "20" in the poll, while DIII with 54 only has "10".....hmmmmm

Most all sports similar to women's ice hockey (Lacrosse, Field Hockey, and others) have at least 20 in all their polls

This is not the way to promote women's ice hockey or any sport by having a meager 10 (out of 54) in the polls

The more schools who are ranked in national polls, the happier college presidents, trustees, student-athletes, parents, fans and alumni are

Does not cost one more penny to have the USCHO national poll be 25 universities

please, please add more in 16-17

    Thank You USCHO!!

Re: Why only 10 in DIII National/USCHO Women's Ice Hockey Nat'l Polls :-(

Quite Frankly there aren't that many good teams. I could see maybe 15 but hell no on 25. The way it really plays out every year the top 5-6 are truly at the top...teams 7-10 could be any of maybe 5-6 teams and then the rest just aren't up there.

Could make that argument for D1 women's bouncy ball. Only four (one) team matters. Then a mix of say 5-6 and the rest.

I think that a case could be made for 15 in the near future, especially if schools keep adding programs as fast as they currently are.

But as go jackets said, currently there is a large gap between the top echelon of schools to the middle tier.

Re: Why only 10 in DIII National/USCHO Women's Ice Hockey Nat'l Polls :-(

Why would you want a poll where half the teams are ranked? Also, your math seems a little off. 60 men's programs, with 20 in the poll (USA hockey ranks 15). 54 women's D-III programs, and you want 25 ranked?

Perhaps we'll go to 15 in the future, but 25 is silly and even 20 is I think too many. As a voter in all 4 USCHO polls, I can tell you that sometimes when voting the 15-20 spots in the men's D-I poll I feel like I'm just throwing darts and filling space.

Maybe 15. 25 would be awful. Next season try the posters poll, picking #10 on a regular basis was hard enough.

Re: Why only 10 in DIII National/USCHO Women's Ice Hockey Nat'l Polls :-(

The number of teams in each of the USCHO polls has to do with the number of teams in the NCAA tournament. We have 20 in the men's D-I poll and 15 in the men's D-III poll because there are 16 and 11 (soon to be 12) in each. Both women's polls have 10 because that's just a bit more than teams that qualify. Once you get past the top third or 25%, it gets difficult for voters to reasonably assess who should be ranked.

I never look past the top five anyway. Waste of time.

That sums it up nicely as to why it is NOT needed. Teams themselves usualy have a pretty good idea where they sit, and if they don't make the top 10 cut they know what to aim for to get there if they happen to be in the mix...beat a top 10 team when you meet them, and/or just keep winning.
