Noel Acciari helped @FriarsHockey build a championship culture. He has an NCAA title, a PC diploma and now a two-year deal with @NHLBruins
Good luck Noel. I must be selfish but wanted you back for one more year. Perfect time for him to sign and he gets to play in Providence to start his pro career. Not a bad last couple of months.
Zlax I am going to begin by admitting I would have loved to have picked up the hottest young coach and not some retread
That said look at 2 things, one is this tweet from Jeff Cox
“@JeffCoxSports: Leaman seems to prefer mix of experience and youth among his assistants if you look back so this fits the bill. https://twitter.com/sbncollegepuck/status/606913834385833984”
The other just go steal Hokey's very rational response in that same UNH thread
A couple of other points most likely the hottest young coach in college hockey right now is Benny having played a major role in building the last 2 national champions. He left in part to position himself as the successor to one of his early mentors which will in theory be an opening that comes far sooner than the Providence job.
To Cox's point it seems no matter how good a coach you are wise council from some veteran who has been around the block can still be handy. Kind of like the bench coach on many MLB teams--some retread who has years of experience. In that respect I feel more comfortable with Borek than Russell.
Expanding on Hokey's point all of PC's recruiting goes directly through Leaman. When it time to close the deal the kid already knows Leaman, not like what the UNH fans say where Umile sweeps in after the assistant has set up the deal. In recruiting for PC the key ability is to be able to Identify the talent and to be a solid evaluator.
Lastly I am under the impression that Mayotte was the recruiting coordinator at SLU and that was his not Miller's responsibility last year so I doubt Borek will have the exact same responsibilities with the Friars
Re: Providence College Friars, the best off-season ever!
Good points Cav
I would put it this way.
What a great year and experience for the entire PC community from the players all the way down to the casual fan.
Leaman is the one consistent and if anyone gets a "I will defer to your judgment", it is him. Do we really think he didn't factor in every variable for this hire? Every single one? Borek must fit a specific role/duty that Leaman has in store for him. A specific role, just like the one Miller had. Borek has a long diverse resume with several very good programs. Has very good connections in BCHL, which adds to their current ties in USHL.
Even if it doesn't work out, I still would defer to Leaman and give him a pass
Russell
Barr
Miller
Borek
Doesn't really matter as long as Leaman is in charge.
Will be interested to see if they get to go to the White House after Union being snubbed last year. Not sure why. Especially with their alumni connections
One other point. That list Zlax got of Borek and MacCloskey's recruits is impressive.
However interesting the UNH folks break it down by assistant ( and obviously keeping the same head coach may make that obvious). I have thought about a PC list I would label it by head coach (again maybe fairly obvious since for the first 2 the key assistant was the same--Berard). At this point if you took Pooley second half of his PC career from the group brought in in September of 2000 it would be 6 classes, Army gets 5 classes with next September since he overlapped Army's last class with some late replacement (Mauerman in particular) 5 for Leaman.
To begin with I would see how weak the Army recruits were and where they fell proved it. I have often heard he was so hands on but without a direction, a vision, and largely worked at cross purposes to what Berard accomplished (also note how Bennett flourished after Army sent him packing because he worked with a coach who had a vision). However look at Pooley's list and this is post Rask-Schaefer-Jon D-Fegoe. He got Wild, Woods, Regan Kelly, Darth Platt, Rheault, McDonald and solid guys like Chaput and Zingoni among his recruits. Still he got mediocre results and part of the time he still had the class of '03. I venture to say Pooley was clearly lacking in charisma but more importantly either because of where sports was being relegated or because of the lack of charisma, maybe credit ability he could not tie the vision he had together and get the most out of his players. Starting basically from scratch post 3 last place finishes with no better players than those Pooley players, but a clear plan and vision Leaman delivered a national championship.
Going a bit further beside what appears to be a bias toward Leaman from the start, it was clear the 2 finalist Leaman and Quinn each had a vision. The third finalist Cavanagh, at the very least could not articulate such a vision in his inert view (and it appears in other interviews)
Now in regards to that list from UNH. Maybe what Whistling Dick benefitted most from McCliskey was he had an assistant with a vision who could see the whole picture of the proper blend of players. Borek maybe lacks that vision, can realize good players since there are plenty of good players to his credit, he just lacks that vision. At PC that vision is coming from Leaman directly..
Let's face it McCloskey got a head job with an elite program even if it was on the women's side, that still might be a better job that some of the Atlantic teams and CHA teams beginning to rise the slightly above 40 Division 1 teams when McCloskey began to 60 now
That brings up the other point McCloskey had less competition to go up against than Borek does today. It's also possible like PC dip at the turn of the century there is less administrative support now at UNH than 15 years ago (point their women's team is truly in a funk). Borek also worked for grandpa Umile while McCliskey worked for legacy building Umile. Maybe it matters players McCloskey was competing for we're not the BC BU targets, but the UML PC targets and Borek has to make a much better case to wangle those guys into his camp since those 2 teams have evolved into solid teams Also if I'm not mistaken the Whitt was brand new when McCloskey recruited, now Borek at least according to some UNH people finds the facilities a handicap.

The Whitt opened in 95
McCloskey recruited very good college players at UNH whileBorek has had some high level success with JvR there is less depth there.
Just my two cents...we will see what happens but I am going on the record that I don't like it.

I'll go on record as saying that Providence will perennially be in the top 3 of Hockey East for as long as Leaman is the head coach, with or without Borek.

even with our championship team last year we hiccupped our way into 2nd last year, could have just as easily been 5th,
crazy league
Cav
I am not by the way 100% convinced that Armys last team with Gillies in net would have been that bad. look at the difference in numbers vs him and Beaudry. Pretty substantial. They made it to Garden following year with mostly Army's players.
PC goalies last year were 941 save % and 1.67 GA
PC with Beaudry his last year with Army was 897 save % and 3.40 GA
That hides a lot of flaws. Oconnor, Mackinnon, Shaller, Germain, Farrar, Bergland , Kramer were pretty hard workers and had some talent.
It worked out perfect but a great goalie can make flaws into a, "oh that was close, vs F" moment. Think last minute vs BU in Garden. Not many make that save outside Gillies.
