  • ECAC 2015-2016 Season Thread

This thread is intened to serve as a forum to discuss the ECAC and its potential for success in 2015-2016. The ECAC has some team specific and some systemic barriers to competing in NCAA D-I hockey but the league also has some strengths. How has our success these past five years helped us with recruiting? Are we sending more players to the pro's? The IVY's have abbrevated schedules and academic indexes but rich traditions. HE is our largest non-conference opponent. In 2013-2014 the ECAC tied HE in head to head non-conference competition. This past year we have stumbled, having a losing non-conference record againt every league except the AHA. We also did not win a single NCAA league game. Our record for the past 5 years is 16-12 with 4 appearences in the FF and two National Champs. What will it take to duplicate that record over the next five years?

Year ECAC record in the NCAAs
    2000 1-2 F4 (1)
    2001 0-1
    2002 0-1
    2003 2-2 F4 (1)
    2004 1-3
    2005 1-3
    2006 1-2
    2007 0-2
    2008 1-2
    2009 1-3
    2010 1-2
    2011 1-3
    2012 3-2 F4 (1)
    2013 8-2 F4 (2) - National Champs
    2014 4-2 F4 (1) - National Champs
    2015 0-3
    2016 ?

Which ECAC teams will be in the top third, middle third, bottom third next year? Which teams are losing the most/least? Given last year is this even meaningful as a predictor?

        Yale is losing seven layers,
19 Anthony Day F A very good forward who lost most of his senior year to injury
22 Tommy Fallen D Sr. Captain of the team and will be hard to replace, good quick puck handler out of his own zone.
7 Matt Killian D Sr. Versatile D-man turned forward who had good size, replacing his points should not be hard
11 Trent Ruffolo F Sr. Steady day to day forward who contributed and forechecked well.
16 Alex Ward F Sr. Never really played a role due to depth early in his career and then injury later.
26 Nicholas Weberg F Sr. Promising scorer whose Yale career was also cut short by injury
29 Connor Wilson G Third goalie

The recruiting lists all have too many players listed for next year. There will be some tough decisions to make for the staff. Joe Snively out of Sioux City seems to be an impact forward who will come in and hopefully improve Yales dismal scoring.

I would have to pick Yale in the top three next year especially with all the returning talent and Lyon in goal.

          Re: ECAC 2015-2016 Season Thread

I think Quinnipiac will also be an early favorite for a top 2-3 team in the league. Biggest losses are Peca and Federico with the other 2 being Alex Barron and Justin Agosta both replaceable players. Jonah and Nathan Renouf are also gone after transferring to Alaska Anchorage but they didn't see any game action this year and would have hard pressed to see minutes next year as well. Coming in is the 4th leading goal scorer in the BCHL in Thomas Aldworth (37 goals) who was a former Providence commit. Other forwards due in are Craig Martin, Scott Davidson, Nelson Gadoury. 3 defensemen are expected in Hamden in Chase Priskie, Daniel Fritz and Luke Shiplo. It's also possible they recruit another forward as well since the Renoufs left and only Aldworth was brought in.

The team returns Anas, Smith, St. Denis up front as the big guns. I'd expect Tanner MacMaster to start to improve along with a few others. Defense is usually solid under Rand teams and they still will have Garteig again.

The top 5 teams in the ECAC are probably Quinnipiac, Colgate, Yale, Harvard and St. Lawrence and not in any particular order that I have listed here.

Cornell's headed for another .500 season unless the freshman are something very special.

ECAC TEAM - GOALIES (* signifies IMO Championship Caliber)
                      Predictions
                      Top Third
                      Yale *
                      St. Lawrence *
                      Harvard *
                      Quinnipiac ?

                      Middle Third
                      Colgate *
                      Cornell *
                      -------------------------------------------------
                      Rensselaer ?
                      Clarkson ?

                      Botton Third
Union - Lost defense 2014, lost offense 2015
Dartmouth - Lost great senior class
                      Brown - ?
Princeton - Rebuilding from the botton up.

Five teams have proven, experienced, championship caliber goalies. This is the ECAC so anything is possible and the unexpected is the most probable.

You answered your own question with the top third above. Unless Snively is an impact player, I do not see Yale going past the first round, still not enough offensive finishers on the team.

This coming weekend and some (October 15 - October 20):
                              Seven matchups against HE

                              Colgate is off
                              RPI is in Alaska

Union (H), St. Lawrence (A) and Clarkson (A) have six against HE
                              Maine (2)
                              New Hampshire (2)
                              Merrimack (2)
                              Q (H) has one against Maine (1)

Can we stay even (.500) with HE?
