  • Beliveau Passes On and Confirms That Hockey is Part of The DNA of Canadian Culture

If any of us needed to be reminded of that fact then Prime Minister Stephen Harper's acknowledgement of Beliveau in the House of Commons yesterday which was followed by a moment of silence should do the trick.

    Wow!

That kind of respect is pretty much beyond words.

Chretian offered him the post of the Governor General of Canada and he passed.

Mulroney offered him a Senate Seat and he passed.

For those interested, I couldn't find the video of the House of Commons acknowledgement that was on the National News last night but found a few other short videos honouring not only the hockey player but also the man.

Listen to what Trudeau says in one of the clips about his father when his father introduced him to Beliveau ...and what Mulroney says about his father when he (Mulroney) received The Order of Canada Medal at the same time as Beliveau and Rocket Richard...amazing...

A legend has passed. The guy I always pretended to be as a kid on my local community rink. Sad news.

He was something to watch and THE reason I took a liking to the Canadiens as a kid.

Then you might like this. Great memories that many of us lived as kids to one degree or another.

For those who might wish to see more...a few articles and some video options down the left hand side of the first article... a moving tribute before the game tonight, especially at the end...and at least 40 minutes devoted to him on CBC's National News tonight!!!...that is seriously expensive air time.

Some other good pieces tonight such as reflections by Ken Dryden (Beliveau was his first room mate and he was Beliveau's last...unbeknownst to Dryden, Al McNeil told Beliveau to keep an eye on "the kid") but it doesn't seem to be available.

Try this for Dryden on Beliveau:
