  • 2015 D1 positions-still a chance?

My daughter is a 97' canadian, unfortunately she did not start contacting D1 coaches early enough. as a result she has gotten little opportunities at the D1 level. i was wondering if there is a chance of spots opening up later in the season. the majority of the teams are full, however what are the chances of injuries etc.. My daughter has been told by one D1 team of a possible chance of a spot depending on multiple issues. Is it possible?

There is always a chance that one or more spots open up at a program. A player drops out do to injury, academic issues, a transfer, or just a change in life circumstances, and an unforeseen spot is available. Some programs will choose to reallocate any dollars freed up among the remaining players, rather than adding a player not in the original plan. There are no hard and fast rules, but at this point, I'd say the chances of getting into any specific program that says it is full are more unlikely than likely.

Contact the low end D1 hockey programs like Lindenwood, Penn State, Brown, Union, Maine, Providence, New Hampshire, Minnesota State, and St. Cloud State. Those programs can't afford to turn down good players that have the academic ability to get into those schools. Merrimack is new for next year so you should contact them too.

I'm assuming that your '97 daughter is looking to attend college next Fall? If your daughter was a strong D1 candidate, then the coaches would likely have seen her play somewhere and noticed her - very rare for a strong player to go totally un-noticed even if they are a late bloomer. Given that, I have to assume she is a low-end D1 candidate - a bubble player. At this point, there is unlikely to be a scholarship spot open at very many schools for a low-end D1 candidate - at best a partial (always one here or there, but she will have to take whatever comes along). More likely she would be a recruited walk-on with standard financial aid at one of the weaker schools that shelfit lists (although I would suggest that SCSU may not belong at that list anymore). Given that, I would urge you to consider pointing her to a D3 program. If even just a few of the D1 programs are interested, then she likely would be a top half of the D3 player. But you better get moving if that is something you're interested in because even the D3 programs are solidifying their recruits for next season.

Depending on your location, do a PG year with a local high end club team that plays in top tournaments. Train, play, take a class or two at a community college, and work a part time job for some gas money and experience in the working world. At worst she gains a year of maturity before heading off to college.

I like the idea of her taking this season to really work on her game, play with a high profile club team, get herself recognized. A lot depends on what she wants out of a D-1 recruitment - does she want to play D-1 hockey for a consistently ranked team, or does she want to be recruited mainly for the college degree?

When it comes to women's hockey the degree is definitely the most important aspect. Until the CWHL starts paying it's players, there isn't a whole lot out there in women's hockey after college.

I'd suggest that before she head the post-grad route that she REALLY needs to make sure that D1 hockey is a realistic opportunity after that PG year. If there aren't at least 3 D1 schools that indicate that they would be interested in her if she did a PG year and that have an opening for that season at this time, then it would probably be a waste of time and she should consider D3 or CIS.

a gal can still get her Mrs degree

Contact UMD, they are struggling to get 1,000 people in Amsoil Arena and are 1-4-1 against the teams they need to beat, so they’ll probably dump a couple current players. Plus Duluth is the most Canadian city in the US, she’d feel right at home with all the socialistic Obama lovers there who sit around spending their unemployment check between intermittent jobs working for an International conglomerate raping the forests and land of its resources.

I count 7 insults/digs/issues in this one post. 83 total words and 7 slams is almost 12 words per slam. We now have a bar to aim for.

Here thinking, perhaps, the same thing . . . equal opportunity 'slammer', seems, old 'Pokey'.
