I'm surprised, though, that Sara Moulton (softball) didn't get a nomination.

Not a clean sweep of the Golden Goldies, but still good. Bona female breakthrough performer of the year, GWH female team of the year. Women's bball took athlete of the year (Rachel Banham) and rookie of the year (Amanda Zahui B). Female team coach of the year went to softball (Jessica Allister). I'm probably missing one or two.

A note on incoming frosh Kelly Pannek, who this spring has taken up lacrosse for the first time, after having been named Minnesota's Miss Soccer last fall:

"Senior Ali Praus leads Benilde-St. Margaret’s with 11 goals, and the Red Knights this season have unveiled a not-so-secret weapon in Kelly Pannek. A hockey and soccer star, Pannek is playing lacrosse for the first time this spring and already has nine goals, second best on the Red Knights."

Some Big 10 Spring awards announced.

Hannah gets a Sportsmanship award: http://www.gophersports.com/sports/w...052914aaa.html

Seven honored as Academic all Big 10: http://www.gophersports.com/sports/w...052814aaa.html (No men hockey players from any big 10 school made the cut, it appears.)

As long as I'm posting, might as well include the next highlight from the top 10 for 13-14: Hannah getting a hat trick on three pretty plays: http://www.gophersports.com/sports/w...052714aaa.html

Evidently Mens Hockey is considered a Winter Sport and Womens a Spring sport.

14 Minnesota Mens Hockey players on the list
                http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/...ll-Big_Ten.pdf

The Big Ten Conference on Wednesday recognized a total of 689 winter sports student-athletes who have been named to the Academic All-Conference team. The list of honored student-athletes features 34 men’s and 50 women’s basketball players, 51 men’s and 52 women’s gymnasts, 69 hockey players, 146 men’s and 186 women’s swimmers and divers and 101 wrestlers. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Hah! How soon I forget. More likely "Big10 sponsored sport" versus "Other". Thanks for correcting me!

So...should have a little competition for goaltending minutes / starts in 2014-2015 eh?

Yes, that's what I think, too. Should be interesting. The goalies seemed to have a pretty good club last year kneeling on the ice together after the games. Will real competition for playing time change that? I hope the little shakiness Leveille showed in the Frozen Four will turn out to be a growing experience that makes her better and tougher. I think the red shirt was evidence (along with the fact they recruited her) that they have high hopes for Sidney.

Leveille was told she is their goalie. I'm afraid we might see yet another great girl sit on the Gopher bench along a few Miss Hockey finalists.....anywhere else these girls would play and thrive as a hockey player. But the Gophers just keep them off the market and away from the game they love and played most of their lives.

So the competition is over before it even starts for the goaltending position for this year or are you referring to last year? Also, if I'm a Miss Hockey finalist does that guarantee me playing time at the college level? Or is it a sure thing that I would thrive as a hockey player If I had chosen to go somewhere different?
At the outset, we could hang with the dude...

No one is forcing anyone to sign on the dotted line - it's up to each player to do what they believe will be in their best interest. From everything I've heard, Coach Frost is very honest and upfront about what role he envisions each of his recruits will have. And it's just not wise for any coach to guarantee a long-term starting position for any goalie being recruited. As is true with all schools and their players, some will work very hard and/or develop late and end up exceeding expectations, and others will not.

Leveille barely played as a freshman and played as much as any UM goalie last year. In more than one season, the goalie that finished the season as No. 1 wasn't in that position at the start. I'm not remembering any kids over the years that never got a shot at being a regular skater. Flug was the only one on last year's roster for whom it could at all be argued that was the case, and she was hampered by the injury to start the season and still had a few series where she was on a top-three line. The situation seems more dire at some of these programs that have 25-30 players on the roster. For a player at any program, I'd say that if you think you deserve more playing time, prove it in practice. These coaches want to win and will play those who offer the best chance at doing so.

Leveille was excellent for 39 games and good enough for 40. I'm not willing to throw her under the bus just yet.

Having said that I am looking forward and looking forward Peters will certainly see some time. If she is good enough she will see lots of time.

These are competitive athletes. At the position they play only one can play at a time.
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
