  • New College Hockey Blog

    http://collegehockeysource.wordpress.com/

New college hockey blog that I started a couple of weeks ago. I would appreciate any constructive feedback as my main goal is to encourage feedback on college hockey, provide a little humor, and present college hockey from a fan's perspective(albeit slightly biased as I admit in the 'About' section). Thanks in advance to anyone that checks it out!

Solid blog though it seems to steer more towards the Western teams than all of College Hockey.

I realize that you are a North Dakota fan, but there is still a rather large western bias. OTOH, I suppose that I should be happy not to have read more about the post-game festivities in Albany (the one in New York, not Minnesota). It is quite good with that caveat.

BTW, your Save Percentage was slightly better than Bobby Farrelly's (http://www.augenblick.org/rpi/h_02g.html, see 1977-8), and he has been doing rather well in other areas.

Not a bad start, but unless you expand your coverage and omit the bias don't try to pass it off as an all "college" hockey anything.

Maybe you will over time and good luck either way.

My only complaint is you can't see the blood on Reggie's face in the background pics.

Thanks for the feedback! I decided to start with what I know best(western hockey, UND, etc.) and branch out from there. I'm really trying to watch more Eastern Hockey when I can. I just wish it was more readily available on TV, webcasts, etc. One of the many reasons for starting the blog was so I could develop a more well-rounded knowledge of all of college hockey. I just don't yet feel I have a firm enough grasp on some eastern schools to comment with any knowledge but I'm looking to change that.

I did see the festivities in Albany and wow that was a shock! I never heard the backstory(if one was ever released) about what got the RPI coach so ****ed!

That's hilarious though about Bobby Farrelly. Maybe I should have stuck with my hockey career path and became a goalie

It's good then that you did not write about it because it was the Union coach who was so ****ed.

I think Vermont and Northeastern also stream their home games for free.

                        Re: New College Hockey Blog

                        I think it's great work.

Focusing on one region or even one team does not necessarily make your blog irrelevant to the broader college hockey community. For example, TBRW (shameless plug) focuses on Cornell first, the ECAC second, and D-1 Men's third, but it includes enough statistical information and history that I get a lot of traffic and support from a much wider audience. The important thing is to have a specialization that adds value for people. Some authors focus on "behind the scenes" access, some on analysis, some on recruiting, some of multimedia, some on pure data. There is plenty of room out there for different voices.

Keep up the good work and devote your attention to what interests you -- that is the vital inspiration of attention and originality which makes a site about any subject worth visiting.

I agree with the others - good blog with a western bias (not that there's anything wrong with that ). Maybe you could team up with an eastern blogger for better coverage.

Your writing is fine, promising start. but in agreement with others...don't try to pass it off for more than what it is: a regional hockey blog. nothing wrong with that. but unless you can recruit other writers, you'll never get beyond half-assed coverage of any other region--much less all regions. for one guy, there aren't enough hours in the day.
so yeah, your blog name is really misleading--felt kind of duped. a raspberry for that.
stick with what you know, focus, and keep writing a good solid UND/minnesota blog--but pleeease dump the "collegehockeysource".
                            cheers from NW Ohio.

Pretty cool that there are so many free webcasts offered, had no idea!

I think the ideas to focus on what I am passionate about are really smart and potentially teaming up with an East Coast writer are great, otherwise it will feel forced and that kind of defeats the purpose(ie mistaking the Union and RPI coaches ).

To Blackswampboy, collegehockeysource.com was the original name because I intended to cover everything but changed shortly thereafter as I realized how much work it is! I will probably be purchasing my own domain name soon but wanted to go through the development process to see what my blog is before finally deciding on a name and throwing down the $28 to Wordpress and wishing I had picked something else, sorry to disappoint you. In my defense, the blog is 3 weeks old .

Thanks again for all of the comments and making me think about what it is I actually want to write about.
