  • BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

"Quinning" has gone over 1,000. Time for a new thread, and hopefully new results. Let's go!

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

After the first few games of the season, which looked pretty promising, David Quinn stated that we 'wouldn't recognize this team' in a few months once it got more experience.
He is right, we don't recognize it. It has only gotten worse as the season has gone along.

The last five games have resulted in a loss and a tie to Merrimack, the only Hockey East team that was below us in the standings.
A loss to neighboring Bentley, whom a lot of people didn't realize had a D1 hockey team.
A loss to a bad Harvard team.
A loss to a very bad Dartmouth team, that has played without it starting goalie and four forwards, including its top two centers.

Just what is going on here?
The performances are listless and without emotion. And the goaltenders, who helped to carry the team through the early going, are besieged.

Quinn said in last night's pregame show that the team has been playing without emotion, energy and enthusiasm. That it had been addressed collectively and in some cases, individually. Okay, the first step to solving a problem is recognizing it.
So what happened again last night? It was only more of the same.
Where is the confidence? Where is the enthusiasm? Where is the fight?

The most telling thing for me came after Dartmouth's fifth goal was under review, with 5-6 minutes left in the third period. The delay, which eventually wiped out the goal, must have take three to four minutes.
During that entire time - the ENTIRE TIME - Quinn, Greeley and Hasanan leaned on the glass behind the bench and at no time said a single word to any player. No coaching. No admonishing. No motivating. Nothing!
Only Buddy Powers said anything to any of the players, and it wasn't a lot.

Then later in the game, after a time out, Maguire needed to be called back before going back in goal, because either he hadn't been told when to come out, or was unsure of what he had been told.

There is no emotion on the ice. There is no emotion on the bench. Coincidence?

Quinn doesn't need to be Jack Parker. If that is not his personality to get fired up, so be it. But if the embers are burning inside, he has got to occasionally show some life and let them out.

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

We recognize that this team is not deep, especially at forward.
Constantly changing the lines doesn't help, particularly because there are some guys that can't play, as well as some that aren't playing well.

Lawrence, a freshman walk-on, on the first line last night?
Kurker, a 2nd Round NHL draft choice, on the fourth line of a thin team?

Why not actually try Kurker with some of his more skilled teammates and see if that gets some production out of him? It might get him over the hump and jumpstart his college career.
Lawrence is a nice find, but he not going to more than a role player this year.

There are enough forwards to come up with two good lines, and ride them.
Come up with a checking third line, and the fourth line should only play when absolutely necessary.

I'd also avoid playing Somerby and MacAfee together until they can regain their confidence.

BU-Maine moved up to 3 p.m. start time
        By Tim Healey/DFP Staff

With an iffy forecast looming, puck drop for BU-Maine at Frozen Fenway Saturday has been moved up to 3 p.m., Hockey East announced Thursday. UMass-Lowell and Northeastern will play at noon.

"The games, originally scheduled for 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., were moved to an earlier time due to expected rain in the Fenway area on Saturday," the release said. "According to Fenway Sports Management’s professional weather service, Telvent DTN, moderate rain is expected to reach the Fenway neighborhood sometime in the early evening, and is expected to continue throughout the night."

Windy with morning showers evolving to a steady, soaking rain in the afternoon. High around 55F. Winds SSE at 20 to 30 mph. Rainfall around a quarter of an inch.

Good thing they moved the game to the afternoon.
                ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If they could get their hands on a large circus tent...
Expectation has the encumberance of truth while hope lives its own life, wild and free.
