  • Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2013-14

Thanks rsfs04 for keeping up with this overnight. We seem to be overloading with left defensemen.

I am getting more convinced that the years that are being assigned to recruits are almost always fluid. I have a hard time thinking that someone playing in the NOJHL will be ready to play as an 18 year old, but ...

Some comments from Bell when he was selected in the 2012 OHL draft http://www.thesudburystar.com/2012/0...rity-selection.

Bradley Bell, a defenceman from the Copper Cliff minor midgets, was the first local player chosen when he was taken by the Mississauga St. Michaels Majors with the 15th pick of the third round.

"It's a big accomplishment and I've been looking forward to it all year," Bell said.

"I hope to show them my best and try to make the team next year."

Bell was pleased to go to a perennial challenger in the Eastern Conference.

"Obviously, it's a good team right in the middle of Toronto and my cousins live there, so that should be fun," he said. "They play here against the Wolves lots, too, so I will get to have lots of friends and family come watch me play."

Bell was relieved to get the draft out of the way so he can return his focus to preparing for the jump to the OHL.

"It feels good that it's finally over and I can get back to training," he said. "It gives me more motivation."
I wonder what made him decide to go the college route, or if he is using RPI as leverage for Mississauga. Perhaps he just didn't make the team the last two years or decided that a 5'11" dman is better off going to college.

Partially answering my own question http://www.timminspress.com/2013/09/...n-nojhl-season.

The Nickel Barons will also have a lot of experience back on the blue line, which Blanchard feels could be a strength of the team.

“We have Bradley Bell coming back,” he said.

“We didn’t think he would be coming back because he had made an OHL team, but he has decided to go the NCAA route.

“So he will be one of the top D-men in the league, which is nice to have him back for a year.
Still not clear why he didn't go to the OHL, but he did make the team. My reason is as good as any.

That's a lot of D, and almost certainly a number would be deferred to 2015, maybe even one to 2016.

We currently have on D a total of two seniors (LeBœuf, Dolan), two juniors (Curadi, Leonard), three sophomores (Bokenfohr, Hampton, Bradley), and one freshman (Reno). Gotta think that Moore and Wilson would be 2014 merely due to age (although Laliberté did come in as a 21-year-old), while the other three are 96ers.

As for them playing LD in juniors, that doesn't mean they can't move over to right. Granted, with the exception of Meirs Moore, all of our D recruits shoot left-handed (Moore doesn't shoot with either hand according to eliteprospects). I'm not going to complain about their dexterity being a natural southpaw myself, perhaps one of them will play opposite side similar to what Patrick Cullen (although a forward) did for a while at RPI, or it will be something similar to what we had in the 2011-12 season when we had only two regular playing right-handed D.

That agrees with my thoughts with the addition possibility that one or more of our existing defensemen might leave early or Bokenfohr might stick to golf.

I think that it is time to give Seth some props. It wasn't that long ago that we were lucky to have a full set of recruits for the following year by May of that year.
Now we have recruits that are two years in advance. And quality recruits at that.
This years team is loaded, and it looks like we have the players to replace them when the time comes.

Not to reverse what you are saying, but all teams are recruiting earlier and earlier. However we are not trailing the pack as it seemed in the latter years of the Fridgen regime. We do still need to replace the four forwards that are leaving in 2015 (Haggerty, Laliberte, Neal, and McGowan).

Now is certainly the time to get that accomplished. Today we're getting to monitor usually at least a full junior season of recruits ahead of their arrivals on campus, which is fun. Reno the obvious exception this time around.

Very true. Soffer is the other exception, but we even found out about him much earlier than we usually do for a likely third-string goalie.

I suspect that sat least some of those forwards only require a visit by SA or a visit by the potential recruit to Troy to be announced.

Chris Heisenberg is calling Bell a 2014 or 2015 recruit. I'll leave him as a 2014 since Bell stated so himself, but as I wrote earlier, I think that most of the recruits could arrive in at least two different years depending in part on this year's performance. I agree with FlagDUDE that Wilson and Moore are the two defensemen most likely at this point to arrive in 2014.
