  • NCHC to use shootouts in conference games

The new NCHC will apparently use shootouts to award extra points in conference games. What do people think about it?

Shoot-Outs stink...bad enough that they do it in the NHL...sad rule to say the least.

Most definitely. What other reason would there be for a new league to do things like hire people, create a website and establish rules?

I don't really have a feeling either way but if you are going to have shootouts, it should be something that is done by all the leagues or non of the leagues.

I can't think of a good reason to have shootouts.

The reason for the talent in the west? Because MN didn't rely on Canada.

Booo. If you want to cut down on ties, extend overtime to 8 or 10 minutes.

When did ties become so horrible?
Sometimes teams are evenly matched on a given night.
It's ridiculous but the "fans" love it so it's likely here to stay.

The only reason I can think of is to prepare players for the NHL. Even with that ties are not a bad thing I hate them. I wish the NHL would stop using them so we can go back to point systems that are easy.

How can anybody say it prepares players for the NHL... Even in the shoot out its not a repetitive skill

I'd say more like getting players mentally prepared for everything at the next level, including shoot outs. Plus they'll be practicing them more which will develop their skill set on that part of the game.

Does anyone know if the CHL has shootouts?

Yes, the CHL uses shootouts - it is the training ground for the top developmental league to the NHL!

Using shootouts to attract more casual fans as the on-ice product isn't what it was 5+ years ago as the quality of the college hockey talent pool continues to decline each year with 30+ players leaving early.

Slap Shot - 444 might want to consider a restraining order.
dggoddard - Minnesota is THE ELITE Program in all of college hockey.
wasmania - you have to be the very best to get ice time with the great gophers!
