Re: Illinois Fighting Illini Hockey is back

Structurally, the B1G ruins the college hockey we knew and loved.

But financially, it is going to work for the big schools and that isn't going to go unnoticed by other big schools.

You have rabid fanbases like Texas, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Oklahoma that will go to games and support teams.

Hell, that goofy little club program in Tuscaloosa is starting to really become a fixture down there.

Boy, chalk this up to yet another silly rumor going nowhere.

In the past few years, there's been a rash of "this school might go D-I" threads, that it's getting kind of tiresome.

I believe either Kepler or DisplacedCornellian once posted a template for these sorts of threads. The only one that hasn't followed the mold is the one on Penn State.

                    Am I missing any?

Here is an article from two days ago quoting Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas.

With a major renovation of the State Farm Center looming, other pressing facilities needs, and a total of 19 sports with almost 600 student-athletes to tend to, expansion currently is not on the radar of the athletic department.

“We’re really not in a mode where we’re entertaining those type of things right now,” Illini athletic director Mike Thomas said.

One of Thomas’ first acts after taking leadership of the department in August 2011 was to initiate a study of each sport and develop a strategic plan to identify and address its needs.

“We’ve got to take care of our own (sports) right now,” he said. “Not to say (expansion) opportunities won’t come down the road in the future .. but at least as we sit here today, our focus is really on the teams we currently sponsor.”
Not exactly the words of an athletic director about to announce a new varsity sport.

Re: Illinois Fighting Illini Hockey is back

Did you people really think a school as big as Illinois would announce a varsity hockey team and NO ONE would have heard any rumors about it beforehand?

This is why this messageboard is the most entertaining on the Internet.

Not that I can think of. I think the UW-M one actually was included in a feasibility study (more accurately, one that said "no freaking way" when it was filed).

I guess you could also include any of the usual "what if" rumblings you find on this board, where people wonder about Navy, Syracuse, Rhode Island and Penn/Columbia.
