  • Is your school a Learfield School?

A few years ago Learfield (Clear Channel) bought the broadcast and marketing rights at a bunch of schools. They then created a cookie cutter website and started monetizing everything in sight. Dan Hannigan has to read so many promos during the game it is a wonder he has time to call the game at all.

Maine just ended a half-century relationship with WABI-TV and it seems unlikely any local network is going to pick up the games. This has set off a mini-riot among followers of the UMaine program. It also got me wondering: Just how many hockey schools did Learfield get, in which leagues and would there be anything precluding them from bundling their teams together and selling them as a package to lure a national or regional broadcaster? So if people here can answer a couple of questions and provide any insight it would be very much appreciated. Just team name, league and TV rights holder (if any)

    School: Maine
    League: Hockey East
TV: None - League games on NESN/NBCSN

    Thanks!

Wisconsin's "Badger Hockey Digest" and all the radio broadcasts are "productions of Learfield Sports." Games have been and still are being shown on the Wisconsin Channel (local public TV), usually on tape delay. Last season, there were two games on NBC Sports, and a large portion were on Fox Sports Wisconsin (sometimes in conjunction with FS North) or Big Ten Network. Last season, some games were shown locally over the air on the local CBS affiliate (WISC) and a couple were on TVW (a subchannel of WISC), but that was not the case this year. Also, Fox College Sports when UW plays North Dakota.

I can't say much more, because I don't know the details of TV deals and I go to all the home games (unless I'm home for a holiday, in which case I only get the BTN games), and more home games are televised than road games (ironically).

Red Rock Radio has the rights for UMD football and hockey teams. They are based out of Duluth and have multiple stations around Northeastern, Minnesota. I'm happy with them because they have an app that allows me to stream the games on my phone.

I think all the BiG schools are working with Learfield.
