  • Lord Stanley's Cup: Who are those guys, part II

Yesterday I started a thread listing where the players on the four remaining teams were from, including some stats on those who went the college route. I got the information off the rosters available on the teams' websites. I only included information on those who played college hockey for U.S. born players, since it was much easier to find (smaller numbers), though it would be interesting to see how many non-U.S. players played college hockey.

Well, it turns out my data was flawed (more like just plain shatty). Mookie was good enough to point out a lot of omissions on the Pens team alone. I had completely omitted players who were designated "N/A," which I now realize must have simply meant that their salary information was not available. I'm not a stats nerd, and it shows. At the advice of my legal team, we pulled the thread, knowing this USCHO crowd can be a very nasty and litigious bunch.

Well, I just couldn't let it be, so here's round 2. If you find another bunch of errors, I guess I'll just have to take a self-imposed suspension (Dubbatical) or you'll have to sue me.

NY 6 vs. MN 5? Oh man, brace yourself, because if facts disprove prejudices the reporter gets trashed. It's how partisans seek the truth.

4 of those NY players played MJ, so they don't count at all. The other 2 went to Hockey East schools so they barely count.

Dylan Olsen was at UMD for 1 1/2 yrs.
Olsen signed a 3-year entry level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks on December 31, 2010, while playing for Team Canada at the 2011 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. His father, Darryl Olsen, played in one game with the Calgary Flames during the 1991–92 NHL season, and spent some of his years in the minor leagues in Salt Lake City, Utah, where Dylan was born.

Clendening isn't listed on the roster at ESPN or NHL.com.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma played at Bowling Green. Assistant coach Todd Reirden did as well.

Jonathan Quick played at UMass-Amherst, not Amherst, just for clarification.

Is there a site that would be considered most legit? I don't even know if there is a special playoff roster. Like I said, I'm not a stats nerd, but once I got into this I didn't want to let it go. I also was curious to see what provinces were supplying most of the talent and how many were US born.

I also wondered why more players weren't from Brazil, with all its tradition.

You might have to check the team's site and see if they list the Black Aces. My understanding is that Black Ace could play, but chances are 99.9% against.

BTW, Clendening is listed as a Black Ace on the Hawks site.

Here's a list of college hockey players that have played at least a game during the third round of the Stanley Cup playoffs as of 06/05/2013.
Here's the final numbers from the second round of the SCP.

The Dustin Penner story is very cool. Totally under the radar. Couldn't get on a junior team in Canada and decided at the last minute to go to enroll at a tiny junior college in Bottineau, ND and play hockey there. Grew up, got some attention, finished at Maine and found himself skating with the Cup a year or two later.
