  • Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

    Time for the 2013-2014 thread.

Last year we started with a post about ____. How about this year with incoming recruits. Below is a link to Chris H's 2013 list for Brown. Looks like it could be a large class. Euler, when will we know who finally enrolls in the Fall?

We have some unfinished business. Last year (yes, it's time to start referring to 2012-13 as last year) was a great stride forward, but there's more to accomplish. I do hope we won't see any sort of regression in 2013-14, as teams often do after their first deep playoff run.

Goaltending is the biggest concern I have at this point. We'd better hope Joe Mello can do what Borelli did, coming out of nowhere his senior season!

At the recent season-end Brown men's hockey banquet, the following announcements were made in connection with the upcoming 2013-2014 campaign:

DENNIS ROBERTSON '14 was re-elected team Captain for 2013-14, and GARNET HATHAWAY '14, MARK HOURIHAN '14 and MATT LORITO '15 were named Assistant Captains for next season.

Kyle Kramer and possibly Davey Middleton should help in the goal-scoring department. A year ago I kept repeating that Mark Naclerio was the "sleeper" in that recruiting class, which was confirmed by his excellent play for most of the year and especially down the stretch. This year I'd like to call attention to Zack Pryzbek. Pryzbek is not a natural goal scorer, but he's a big, skilled, tough kid, who plays the game much like Garnett Hathaway. He's also the kind of intelligent, articulate young man who usually thrives at Brown.

It's going to be difficult for a young defenseman to crack the regular line-up, what with six experienced defensemen returning plus Nate Widman, who missed most of this past season but is projected as a top-three defender. Tyler Wood probably has the best chance but maybe one of the other two incoming defensemen will surprise us, as Brandon Pfeil did this year.

Goaltender Tyler Steel had a great season with the Merritt Centennials of the BCHL.

Robertson was an outstanding captain as a junior, and his re-election was a no-brainer. Hathaway, Hourihan and Lorito are excellent choices to serve as assistant captains.

He certainly looks like a worthy successor to Anthony Borelli. The college commitments of the BCHL players for next year, including its all-star teams, show this is a very strong league.
