Re: RPI Off-Season 2013 Part I: We Will Get Our Title Next Season
One other element to consider: as you said, he almost "has to" interview....and if someone else is then hired, he can then come back to the team and say, "you guys are just too special to me for me to leave you just when things are starting to jell in a wonderful way. Now, let's go out and get to that Frozen Four." It could (one daydreams at least!) lead to a boost of morale and energy for our guys for OGC to be considered for such a tradition-rich program and then return here.
Also, I think OGC and the administration might agree that, rather than increase OGC's compensation (bad precedent and all that), they might spend more money instead on assistant coaches, facilities, what have you. If OGC has leverage and wants to use it, I'd suggest to him that he use it in the direction of making the program better / making his life easier / creating a lasting legacy here.
Every "rich" person I know says that after a certain point, the money doesn't matter as money per se; it matters more as a way to "keep score": am I doing the best I possibly could be doing? "Philanthopy" and an abundance of material success have always been linked in our national tradition, and expressing it in this creative way would be a winner for all parties.
