OSWEGO, N.Y. - SUNY Oswego is pleased to announce that Susan Viscomi has been selected as the next Oswego State Director of Athletics effective June 1. She comes to Oswego State with more than 30 years of intercollegiate athletics experience as a coach, associate athletic director and, most recently, as Athletic Director at Hilbert College in Hamburg, New York.

“I am both honored and humbled to serve as the next Director of Athletics at Oswego State. I am eager to partner with President Stanley, Dean Scharfenberger, the Intercollegiate Athletics Board and, of course, the incredible student-athletes, coaches, staff, faculty, and alumni to continue to emphasize the important role that athletics plays in cultivating strong, capable leaders. I share Oswego's vision for excellence and believe it's important to develop student-athletes who strive for exemplary academic achievement, competitive excellence, and a commitment to serve the communities in which they live,” stated Viscomi.

Viscomi, who became Hilbert's first female athletic director in July 2010, oversees the college's 13 NCAA Division III men's and women's sport teams and personnel, manages the athletics department budget, oversees NCAA compliance management and creates strategic planning for athletic recruitment, retention, staffing and facilities. During her time at Hilbert, her strategic planning efforts yielded a two-fold increase in the number of full-time staff members and several facility upgrades.

Prior to the Ellisburg N.Y. native's arrival at Hilbert, Viscomi served as the Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator at Hamilton College for 13 years, as well as the Interim Athletic Director during the 2006-07 academic year. Her primary responsibilities at Hamilton included compliance and eligibility oversight, game management oversight, schedule coordination, coordination of the women's athletic program and coordination of the required physical education program, along with teaching introductory physical education courses. She also served as the head women's soccer coach for three years.

Before joining Hamilton's staff, Viscomi was the Oswego State head women's soccer coach for seven years during which she was twice named State University of New York Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (1991, 1996). Her other collegiate experiences includes a stint at Plattsburgh as an assistant professor of physical education, head women's soccer coach and assistant coach of men's and women's track and field.

Viscomi has served in numerous capacities with the NCAA at the national, conference and institutional level since 1995. She has served as a member of the NCAA Championships Committee with liaison responsibility for Men's and Women's Ice Hockey and Men's and Women's Track and Field and as chairperson and member of the NCAA Women's Soccer Committee. She has also completed the NACWAA/HERS Institute for Administrative Advancement.

Viscomi earned her Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Colgate University and Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Physical Education from SUNY Cortland.

I can't understand how a school that has such a great men's team hasn't been able to field a good women's team yet. I know the financial aid deal did derail a lot of their progress but there are schools like Adrian, Norwich and St. Norbert that started their teams at the same time or after Oswego and are already relevant on the national scene.

Actually I believe they are coming off their best year. Not quite Platty Elimira or Norwich talent yet.

Their best overall record was 2010-11 when they went 13-10-2, mostly because Emi Williams was a monster in net. Last year they hosted and won a playoff game for the first time and this season the small roster size and lack of conditioning brought them back a step. It just seems like all of the schools that have consistently good men's teams also have consistently good women's teams except Oswego.

Dont take this the wrong way, but up untill 2006 when the Lakers started the program Oswego had only been in 2 other Final Fours (1987 and 2003). Trying to compare them to a Norwich or Plattsburgh isn't all that fair as far as "startup" team comparison.

You also have to look at the league they are in with arguably two/three of thr most dominate teams in Plattsburgh, Emlira, and RIT at one time. There is probably 6 loses to any mid pack team.

The FA fall out is a lot bigger on the womens end as the talent pool isn't as big as the mens side. There are only a handful of your grade A 5-star what have you type player's in womens hockey. If you dont have the $$$$ to attract them from historically winning programs.

I think Oswego (once healthy) can be a top tier team. Are we talking Plattsburgh, Norwich, Middlebury type? Probably not but they will be in the games more so to speak. Going .500 with what coach Dillion had is a pretty remarkable feat.

I see what you are saying Remy about the Laker men prior to 2006 but they did have some really good years in the pre-D3 days as well. If you look at the rest of the athletic department there isn't exactly a lot to write home about in there so it is not that surprising that the womens team hasn't made that next step. Maybe that will happen with the new AD.

What the women's team did this year was amazing when you consider how small the roster was and what they lost due to the financial aid situation. If they can surround some of their top players with enough warm bodies to give them a rest they should be able to take the next step and at least challenge Elmira and Plattsburgh at the top.

Remy's right in that the 12-13 recruiting class was a no-show when the student aid program was changed...and you are both right that the team this year exceeded all reasonable expectations given the short bench and the talent...having said that, the program should continue to build...the quality of the education, the hockey facilities, building community and student support and games on WTOP and WNYO provide essential building blocks for coach Dillon to create a sustainable success story....

Very nice, but obviously strictly for training, as there appears to be no spectator seating.

And it is really tough to run an actual indoor track meet when the track has only 3 lanes.

But the recruiting advantage Oswego has with their facility is astounding. There's a reason why the men's team can easily get topnotch talent. There's no reason the women can't match that. Yet, the women have consistently been a bit better than .500 at best.
