  • The Most Beautiful Goal of the Year

An absolute stunner by Rattray at about 48 seconds of this highlight clip from yesterday.

Too bad for UMD that she changed her mind.

Gotta love that team from Canada...err...I mean , Clarkson.

This link should be easier since it's direct...didn't realize you'd have to sift through other videos with the previous link...

Actually, it was expected she was going to end up at SLU, which had been her first choice when she was in Grade 11.

Wait till you see the one she scored today. Not quite as difficult as yesterdays but another beauty none the less.

My vote for most beautiful goal goes to Quinnipiac's Amanda Colin for her 3OT GWG vs SLU today.

For context, a real goal scorer's goal, from a girl who prior to this game had only 1 goal this season. Until she put it in, I would have given POG honours to SLU's goalie carmen mcdonald.

Miraculous individual efforts that result in improbable goals are very fun to watch, but personally I love to see goals where multiple players make great tape-to-tape passes, and the last one to touch the puck has an almost whole empty net to shoot at and record the goal.

Anyone else here old enough to remember the great (pre-1980) Soviet teams? They were so good they made such beautiful goals almost seem routine.

Yes. They were something to watch.

The player all alone at the back post for the easy tap in, the easy last pass to the back of the net.

Yes, and the story of *why* they played that style makes it even better. Anatoli Tarasov was given the task of creating a national ice hockey program in the aftermath of WWII. The problem was that they were desperately poor and had next to no budget for equipment. As a consequence, Tarasov was told that they couldn't afford to replace broken sticks. So he created what we think of as the Soviet style as a way to play effective hockey within that limitation. They literally couldn't afford to take big shots from the blue line and create rebounds. So he designed a game plan that would lead to lots of passing and tap-in goals.

Went to game 3 vs Canada in 1972 Summit Series. This series was embroiled in politics and was almost surreal. There was so much political tension between the two countries because of this series that you had to live through it to believe it...it's not an exaggeration to say that many thought that the next step would be one involving the military. It was like war without the military yet being involved. It had Phil Esposito appealing (some might say whining) to the Canadian public on National tv and ended in the most celebrated goal in Canadian hockey history...also know as "the shot heard around the world."

When the second half of the series moved to Russia the Russian (hockey?) authorities did all sorts of things in an attempt to assure victory such as having hotel rooms occupied next to those of the Canadian players with planted all night revelers so that the Canadian players wouldn't get any sleep...seriously! The goal judge would often fail to turn the goal light on after Canada scored...etc., etc..

If you want to get a feel for what I'm talking about click the link to Henderson's winning goal and watch closely, right afterwards, for the gesture that a Team Canada coaching staff/official on the bench gives the Russian crowd, not once, but twice and see if you can figure out what he says to them. It's the easiest lip reading you'll ever do.

Tretiak was beyond belief in that series. We, including everyone on this forum who loves the women's game, have a lot to thank the Russians for with respect to the discipline that they applied to their conditioning...found out later that the Canadians were drinking beer during the series! Without knowing this, but being so disgusted with how out of shape they were, my friend and I yelled from our glass level seats to Esposito as he skated by "have another beer Phil!"

Henderson's jersey just sold a few years ago at auction for $1.2M.

If you're interested in the behind the scenes turmoil check this out...it was unprecedented...

Here's the winning goal in the final game (game 8)...the video screws up but corrects itself...remember to watch the Canadian bench after the goal...

Here's another winning goal by Henderson in game seven in and around 4 Russians...

And Esposito's address to the country...

Vividly remember being glued to the tube watching. I lived in cold war Europa in the 70's, and over there we watched the annual battle between the Swedes, Czechs and Russians. These battles were all out wars, specially in the years the event was held in Czechoslovakia. They were still bitter about the 1968 oppression by the Soviets. In those days Canada and the US were a non-factor in the World Champs and Olympics. In Europe we had little to no exposure to the NHL.

Did not really learn about the Canada - Soviet series until arriving in Canada in the late 70's.
