+ Nugnes is very effective in shootouts due to strong balance on his skates. He challenges well and does an excellent job of not biting on shoulder fakes and dekes. He exhibits the ability to keep his glove active, which allows him to adjust his hand positioning as pucks get closer to his body. He must be careful to not retreat too deep in his crease in order to maximize his net coverage without over-sliding or over-pursuing shots.

A goalie can't do too much better than Ouellette did last night!

With the Holidays over I have updated the stats https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...rive_web#gid=0

You noticed a new name on the list in Cushing Academy 95' birth year defenseman Malcolm Hayes who's committed to Maine next fall. I hope to get in touch with him by the end of the week.

Other recruiting notes defenseman Tyler Nanne committed to Ohio State today. He visited Maine in the fall and was one of the top uncommited 17 year olds in the country. AJ Greer a top 96 birthyear forward who decommitted from Penn State before committing to BU, it was reported Maine was one of the schools he was looking at it. He goes to Kimball Union where Tim Whitehead is the coach.

I sure hope he is a student of the game, because from the looks of it Jay Leach forgot his glasses on this day at the rink.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LRWHrxUzeY

30 years of coaching and 20+ years of it in the NHL. I figure he can see well enough.

When I look over that footage I see a fairly solid "at home" type of defenseman that can lug the puck, is strong on the puck, and can knock opponents off the puck in his own end. And the skating needs some work, agility and lateral movement. But given his size it is safe to say he has a lot of potential.

I would like to ask the people in the know who is coaching the defensemen with this new staff. It seems there is a noticeable improvement in Maine's own end from the blue liners.

Agreed, I'd say he does have huge upside potential with his size and agility. Wonder if he's a soccer player too. Just wait until he's taught how to really use that frame effectively.

Well, what I am looking at is a noticeable difference in the size of the recruits since last summer...

                          Malcolm Hayes-RD 1/7/2014 Cushing Prep 6'3 215 /95
                          Pat Shea-W 12/3/2013 2015 Marshfield /97
                          Mitchell Fossier-LW 12/3/2013 2015 TPT Thunder U18 5'8 140 12/21/96
                          Cam Spicer-D 11/24/2013 NH Jr. Monarchs (Eastern) 6'1 180 -96
                          Mark Hamilton-LD 11/4/2013 Vernon (BCHL) 6'2 210 1/3/94
                          Lucas Michaud-LC 10/25/2013 2016 Berwick Academy 6' 190 -97
                          Joe Widmar-RW 10/29/2013 Connecticut (EHL) 6'0 205 2/21/95
                          Nolan Vesey-LW 7/15/13 2014 or 2015 South Shore (USPHL) 6'1 190 /95

This, and the transfer forward Tegeler is a big kid.

Not sure about Shea, but it seems like it was rare for a while if someone was 6 ft. tall or better. Now it seems the opposite.

Well Maine has the head coach and top assistant with a lot of NHL experience. And Guite, who for all intents and purposes was a power forward at the college level and a solid two way defensive checker at NHL level with his frame. Seems like we are going to see a very different brand of Maine hockey now. The crowd at Maine is going to love it.

The Hamilton recruit is interesting because he is from MA but played a year in BCHL and from what I am reading is a solid "at home" defensemen with some good size. Very encouraged by the way it seems the new coaching staff is coaching and putting an emphasis on defense. It is quite different than what we have seen the past several seasons.

Shea is 5'10" 180 lbs, but he's only a junior in high school.

Thanks for the link. Encouraged by the job the new coaching staff has done so far, both during the games and on the recruiting trails.
