3 pts from a rival is always good in my book.

They need to work on the PP big time, the Badgers were almost daring them to score a PP goal in the 3rd. If the Gophers convert a few this game isn't close.

Maybe I am a little biased but I really have to question the officiating in the series. I am really impressed that Eaves was as under control as he was.

great game for the gophs, credit where credit is due, they're just the superior team, better skaters, more difference makers, etc.

ugh

Thanks for stating the obvious. If the Badgers would have put in two more goals, the game would have been tied.

I thought UW did play tough but when the team is going 1-5-2 that's no consolation unfortunately. those little victories might mean something if they were 5-2-1...

for UMN - you just have to love that frosh goalie, Bjugstad, Haula, Rau (I hate this friggin pest). If I were to guess, I'd say you guys will be making the frozen four.

It's called the "SCSU Vs Bye" thread. ;)

In March it's called the "Bye - Bye" thread.

The difference is that I don't think that LaBate's intention was to deliver a punishing blow to Haula. While it was a hit from behind (which is a minor penalty away from the boards), it wasn't a check that was intended to drive Haula into the boards. Part of the issue was that Haula was at the worst possible distance from the boards - too far to avoid hitting the boards all togeather, but not close enough to be supported by them. Like I said, all of the ingredients were present for that to have been a very bad situation if either Haula was less situationally aware or if LaBate had delivered a stronger initial check.

On the other hand, it was clear that Barnes' intention was to lay a punishing hit on Serratore (or any gopher for that matter) and when you do that you had better be **** well sure that 1.) you don't charge and 2.) you hit the other player square in the torso. Even without the contact to the head, Barnes was guilty of charging (which may very well have been called a major anyway) all the contact to the head did was what insure that he was given the major.

Again, neither play has a place in the game and the only person responsible is the one who made the decision to deliver the initial check because by doing so they transferred the resulting outcome to the refs judgement (regardless of what that judgement is). No hit and the ref has no decision to make.

Don't know if has been discussed or touched upon, but USA Hockey no longer allows the referees any leeway in interpreting a CFB.

Starting this year a CFB - regardless of intent or intensity - is a major penalty.

You think a program that gets fed the best American Hockey players every year for decades would have anything less? Why is Minnesota struggling at all? BC is the is the best of the best and you will see it again at the end of the year. This series was a mismatch from the start. Badgers hung in pretty well. It was like D1 vs D2. Wisconsin is just not talented enough to complete with the leagues best. In addition when they do have their guns the offensive concept at Wisconsin just does not do it.

I know the future looks brite at UW but to see teams like Denver UND and Minny better than us every year is disappointing. CC sweeps us and gets swept by Denver.

We are at low point in program history right now. Only one way to go, that's up. You look at the banners in the Kohl center. Last Final Five championship 1998. Last WCHA regular season title 1999-2000.

Speaks volumes.

This is NCAA hockey, not USA hockey.

Certainly isn't true of USA Hockey either.

Of the 6 or so cfb penalties in my son's first 8 bantam games this season, only one has been a major. The rest were 2 (minor) & 10 (misconduct).

the future looks bright at UW? really? you mean when the 12 guys who can't score and can't skate with skating teams like MN and CC graduate and they have the youth excuse all over again? that future? I'd like to find an optimistic UW hockey fan right now that can explain to me logically how UW becomes a power again under Mike Eaves. they've missed the NCAA tourney 4 of the last 6 years, they'll miss 5 of 7 and 3 consecutive this including this year unless a MAJOR miracle occurs.

The friend I took to the game on Saturday asked "where are the 'Sconny fans?" He remembered the old days when Wisconsin hockey had a loyal following who traveled well, at least the few miles across the border to Minneapolis. I mean there was a scattering of "Sconnys around, usually an individual paired with Gopher fan, but not the blocks and large groups like there used to be at the border battles. Eaves better turn it around soon or Sconny hockey will look like their football did in the early 80s.

Ah, yes, the good old days, when you used to see a Badger puking his guts out every time you went to the bathroom.

Correct. There has been no rule change or mandate from USA Hockey, though Minnesota Hockey did make some changes after the Jablonski incident.

A turnaround would require an absolute miracle. I'm not holding my breath. Even if he gave two shots about the program, our fat bastard AD shouldn't be holding his breath, either. He should be throwing bags of money at Gwoz or otherwise telling his underlings that know something about hockey to start looking for quality candidates and trying to find out how to create an undead Bob Johnson.

As for the football team in the 80s: it's too late. We're already halfway there.

The Badgers better turn it around by early Feb when they go to UND. It's the last conference series in a very fun and intense rivalry, and the games will hopefully do that history justice. They will never replicate Hukalo Weekend, but physical play and some close games would be great. A handshake brawl would be too much to hope for.
