UNO is ahead of SCSU in the pairwise, though it's way to early to be arguing about this crap. Only time will tell.

Though Red Cow, I feel your pain. UNO is still a really new program, and if takes a while to build that cred. It sucks, especially when time to time we know we deserve better, but I still think our squad over preforms when under rated. We will just slide through getting our wins and that will show them where we really deserve to be. Polls don't mean as much as "W"s...for ANY school. A lot of hockey left to go....

What PWR are you looking at?
SCSU is 13, UNO is 18.

PWR is not rankings, its computer based info and does not factor in things such as injuries, dominant wins, etc. I don't know that human rankings factor this in too much (usually the people doing the ranking don't know THAT much about all the teams) but St. Cloud has been without our top goal scorer last year for the last 5 games including our splits against DU and UND and our projected top freshman has missed all year, and both could be playing again within a month or so.

And yes, it is too early to look at PWR. You know how you can tell? Your #1 team in the nation... Dartmouth

That was my point exactly.

Get the "W"s, the rest will come.

Well, its Charger week.

I understand and appreciate Trev Alberts and Coach Blais stance that scheduling them as much as possible, because we were once in the same shoes as they, is admirable, but, there is really no upside to playing them. Particularly since they have been our out-of-conference Kryptonite, much like the Beavers have been to us in-conference. Anything short of a sweep this weekend is a fail.

Scheduling this week's series Friday/Saturday is something I would not have done since games played by UNO on Husker game days have typically been poorly attended. The Husker game is in Iowa City Friday and there is going to be an army of Husker fans over there for that one, particularly since Iowa fan has long ago given up on their season, and the Huskers are playing with the Legends Division championship on the line. Couple that with a low fan interest opponent, the fact that it is "Black Friday", and they might have been better off with the same Saturday/Sunday arrangement we just went through with UMD. At least the Husker game is an 11:00 A.M kick-off so they don't directly conflict in that regard, since UNO plays at 7, Friday evening. I bet there is something like only 4000 fans at the Friday night game. Hope I am wrong.

UAH comes to Omaha 1-10-1, with their lone win coming at Lake State this past Friday night (I'm for sure not counting their two lopsided home exhibition wins against the Frozen Tide, an ACHA Division III team) and a home tie against the Purple Cows, earlier in the season. They are having trouble getting the puck in the net, to say the least, having scored only 14 goals this season so far and (ugh) giving up 43! That is the worst offense in all of D-1, sports fans, and the 3rd worst defense. Couple that with a power play that makes ours look good and you have the makings of a pretty awful weekend if you want to watch good hockey. Considering that UNO is one of the better defensive teams in the country (allowing an NCAA best 21.6 shots per game), I really would like to see us not allow more than a couple goals the entire weekend.

I am a little worried that our guys might also might be looking ahead to the Minnesota series the following weekend at Mariucci. Hope that's not the case. We're gonna be going from a weekend with little relevance to a weekend with huge, enormous relevance. We're going to find out just how good we are that weekend and so will Minnesota since we will be the best opponent they have played this season when we come calling. We'll likely be sporting an 8-3-1 overall record by then, including a road sweep of a team that Minny really struggled with and got out of there with, barely, a split.

First things first, though. Its time to put a beat-down on the Chargers.

Yes let's hope that we sweep UAH, so that SCSU Euro can can stop with pointlessly looking back at last season to judge this season. Really it's far to early to say where UNO stands right now or SCSU for that matter.

If UNO is to stand on its own they can't be worrying about Husker football games as it is practically the state religion. Maybe UNO should schedule around those dates and maybe not, it will always be a problem, though the night games are surely worse.

Glad I am on your mind; awkward.... but as RC points out, this is a no win weekend for you. Who cares if you sweep them, you will still have zero wins against good teams on the year

After seeing how full UND's hands were this weekend, at home no less, with the Bulldogs and also watching Michigan Tech split with Minnesota back in October, I think that is, at least, somewhat debatable. We'll know a whole lot more about the league's hierarchy after the next 3 weekends, that's for sure. I assume you think UND and Minnesota are good teams? We swept teams they had trouble with. One of them on the road.

I can tell you this. I have seen UNO play, in person, 8 times, now, and I have seen every team above us and just below us in the WCHA standings numerous times (thank you, Direct TV), except for St. Cloud State, whom I've not seen at all, and:

1. The Mavs are better than I thought they would be this season, by quite a bit.

2. And, none of those teams has looked measurably better than we do by the eye test, except maybe Denver, who, to this point, is playing the best hockey in the league. It's a long season, though.

Besides the teams in our own league, I can also throw having seen #8 Notre Dame in there as well, who we played in the Icebreaker in a very evenly matched game, after which Jeff Jackson himself was very complimentary of UNO.

I'll eat crow, if and when the time comes, but, I am pretty convinced that we are going to be an upper half of the league team. I've had UNO season tickets since the '01-'02 season and sat through UNO's 8-26-5 season in '03-'04, their first in what was then known as the Qwest Center, and I know "suck" when I see it from first-hand experience. This ain't it, so far.

Nowhere did I say UNO sucks or even wont get home ice. Not only do I think they will, you can check to see my preseason conference predictions but I called it.

However, you couldt understand why they were ranked #6 in the WCHA in a poll... I can find 5 teams to put ahead of you (4 for sure, you and CC I could go either way on). MN, UND, DU and SCSU are not only who I consider to be the cream of the WCHA but the teams I can't see missing the NCAAs.

I also said you (and CC) have beaten nobody. You pointed to MTU and UMD... a combined 3-9-2 in league play, two wins coming against 1-4-1 BSU. MTU and UMD are 43rd and 49th in RPI, neither is ranked, neither even is in top 10 of "others receiving votes." With less than 60 teams that means not are bottom half teams and to be a "somebody" don't you have to be in the top half?

I know its early to look at RPI but you guys are 0-1-0 against TUCs, losing to Notre Dame. CC meanwhile is 0-4-0. I think you both get home ice but knot much more bc I think you are both better than UW, MTU, UAA, BSU, MSU-M, and UMD.

And I realize SCSU only has two wins against TUCs, but if we don't split with them DU and UND are right now undefeated in the WCHA.

I know you didn't say "UNO sucks" and I did not mean to imply that you were even hinting at that, either. I'm not trying to pick a fight and I don't think you are, either. I think I understand exactly where you are coming from and, in fact, you make some valid assertions that are somewhat hard to argue with--yet.

One thing, the reason UMD and MTU are a combined 3-9-2 in league play is because 4 of those losses are to us. Your logic penalizes us for having beaten (swept) them! That's not entirely your fault, though, since so little of the season has been played, it tends to skew (factual) numbers like those and give them more meaning than they probably deserve this early in the season. If their combined winning percentage is still in that neighborhood at the end of, say, January, then that statement will carry much more meaning than it does, now.

I think I've just done a poor job of saying that, to me, we look better than the preseason #7 WCHA team. I think this team looks better than Coach Blais first year squad here, which was our last in the CCHA, and that team went 20-16-6. We've played very well in all of our losses, ALL of which are by one goal. If we go to St. Cloud or Minnesota in the next three weeks and lay eggs, then I will probably be singing a different tune.

Touche'.

We will see.

In other news, UNO is so good they moved up 3 spots in this week's USCHO poll to # 15, despite having the weekend off. :p

Imagine if they had actually played.;)

Apparently, the pollsters are in breathless anticipation of our third consecutive sweep upcoming this weekend.

Or the teams ahead of you lost. :D

We did the same thing, leapfrogging Michigan and CC who got swept and Cornell who lost and tied.

The Omaha World Herald sounds off on this weekend's UAH series, from a "why do we have so much trouble with these guys and BSU, too?" perspective:

http://www.omaha.com/article/20121120/MAVS/711209887/1707#old-nemesis-has-posed-problems-for-mavericks

We are 3-9-4 against UAH and BSU over the last two seasons while UAH was going 7-64-4 overall during that time frame and BSU was going 14-35-5 in all other league games not involving UNO during that same time frame.

Sheesh.

This. Must. Stop. Now.

Yecch.

We won a game we mailed in and looked pretty bad doing so.

The team took a long time to come out of the locker room after the game for the sing along as the Mav's radio news media reported they got a well deserved earful from the coaching staff when this one was over. I don't think I'd want Dean Blais mad at me.

Also, not a well officiated game.

And to think, I paid my hard earned money to witness that. A horrible game. We won, though, so..................

In other news, Faulkner remains unbeaten in goal.

Yes it was definitely a poorly played game by UNO. Good to get the win but hopefully the come out a little more inspired tomorrow.

Faulkner remains solid in net. Tonight will hurt his save percentage a bit more, but anytime you can rely on a guy with 2 Goals Against a game or lower, when facing 15 shots or 30, that's a good bet. We have better D then we have had in recent years, too, and that really helps. I know Faulkner wants that first goal back from last night.

Hopefully UNO comes out and just destroys it tonight.

Sounds like UNO put quite a beating on UAH on the radio, as I was unable to make it tonight. Good to hear Stolarz get the shut out. Up next seeing how UNO does against some stiffer competition.

Red Cows

A much better game than last night, but, honestly, this wasn't our "A" effort, either. Stolarz gets his first career win, a shutout. You could almost hear him grinning on the post game show on the radio driving home from the game. For those that don't follow UNO, Stolarz is the highest round NHL draft pick in school history, a 2nd rounder of the Flyers.

3rd consecutive sweep in a row now for our guys. This is the 2nd longest winning streak in school history.

A complete game of sorts as 7 different players scored. We're really a well balanced team on offense (and much better than I thought, offensively) with 7 players now at 10 points or better. It's worth mentioning that last year's leading scorer, Matt White, is NOT one of those 7 guys.

We have some nice stats, team-wise, nationally, too:

Offense #4
Defense #8
Power play #10
Penalty kill #15

And we don't take many penalties, 44th nationally.

Conference stats?

Offense #2
Defense #2
Power play #4
Penalty kill #2

UNO has given up only 4 goals in the 3rd period this season, the least in the NCAA.

The downside, and once a thread for our upcoming Minnesota series gets started, every fan not wearing a UNO or Minny jersey is going to be saying the same thing about both of us:

Minnesota's record against Tuc's: 0-0-0
UNO's record against Tuc's: 0-1-0

UNO, Minnesota, Niagara, Holy Cross, and Union are probably the biggest unknowns in the top 25 of Pairwise right now (if you even believe Pairwise is worth looking at before about January 1) as, collectively, these 5 teams are are only 1-3-0 against Tuc's.

That is going to get shoved in our faces all week, particularly by fans of our conference foes. It's the only thing tempering my enthusiasm, somewhat, right now.

Needless to say, with apologies to, perhaps, CC and UND, our series with Minnesota this weekend is the biggest of the season so far in the WCHA.

UNO moves up a couple notches this week in the USCHO poll to #13.

Nice article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune about UNO:

http://www.startribune.com/sports/blogs/180834471.html

I note that their Gopher blogger who wrote this is sorta misinformed about the so called "name change":

http://www.omaha.com/article/20120929/MAVS/709299815/-1#what-s-in-a-name-mavs-like-omaha

I knew UNO was among the NCAA leaders in shots on goal (a hallmark of Dean Blais tenure here so far) and in least shots given up as well, but, I did not know that UNO was the biggest team in all of college hockey. I guess I shouldn't be surprised when the roster has thirteen guys 6' 2" or taller and 5 of those guys are 6' 4" or better.

Red Cows

What do we make of tonight's win against the Gophers?

I'm reluctant to draw too many conclusions as yet. For now, I'll stick with the numbers. I want to see tomorrow night's game, which is now major league important for the Gophers. If we beat them again tomorrow.............

UNO is still undefeated all time at Mariucci. It would be kinda cool to leave the WCHA saying we never lost to Minnesota in their building.

John Faulkner is still undefeated this season.

UNO just had the first unbeaten and untied month in school history. We're one win from tying the school record for consecutive wins.

Minnesota lost for the first time this season when leading after one period and UNO kept their season to-date unbeaten streak alive when they score first.

The Gophers were outshot for the first time this season and 21 shots was a season low for them (and that number is right at our average shots allowed this season).

Tony Turgeon saw meaningful playing time for the first time this season and predictably spent his share of time in the penalty box.

I bet Minnesota wishes they hadn't run Ryan Walters off when they asked him to play another season of Juniors. He's the 6th leading scorer in the nation now (tied).

UNO is in the top 12, nationally, in all 4 of the biggies. Team defense, team offense, power play, and penalty killing.

This team may be a serious threat to the all time single season team record of 24 wins.

The only thing tempering my enthusiasm is the lack of games played against very many high caliber opponents so far. That said, the few we have played don't look any better than us--in any facet of the game, either.

Lets go get'em tomorrow night.
