  • Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Carey Will Bring Pro Scouts To Appleton
Sept. 5: The upper left hand corner on the entrance end of St. Lawrence University's Appleton Arena has long been a popular spot for National Hockey League scouts watching draft-qualified players as well as free agents on ECAC Hockey rosters. The proximity of Appleton to Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto has kept a steady stream of scouts coming to Canton.

That stream should become a torrent in 2013-14 as the Saint men's hockey team will be led by a player who will rank among the top free agent prospects in all of college hockey. Saint senior Greg Carey led the nation in goals scored and power play goals a year ago, earned All America honors and was one of ten finalists for the Hobey Baker Award. He is the first returning All America for the Saints since Pete Lappin in 1988 and the first junior in program history to be a Hobey Baker finalist.

"Greg made a wise move in not jumping to the NHL after a great season a year ago," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "He is a mature and intelligent guy and knows that his game is still developing. He came back to school in his best shape by far physically, and that is a big step for him in terms of taking his game to a professional level.

"He has the obvious skill of scoring goals, and we are all excited to see what he can do as a senior with his maturity and knowledge of the game. We are going to see a lot of pro teams sending scouts to Appleton, because there is no question that he is one of the top free agents in all of college hockey this year."

Carey heads into his senior season with a three-year total of 66 goals and 62 assists for 128 points and is destined for the Saint all-time list in goals and points if he maintains his career average of better than a point per game. He is the first Saint player to lead the team in scoring in three consecutive seasons since Rich Peverley from 2001-04 and could become the first player in program history to lead the team in scoring in four straight years.

His 28 goals a year ago are the most for a Saint since Burke Murphy scored 33 in 1995-96 and are tied for fifth on the all-time list and his 14 power play goals and six game winners as a junior rank among the all-time top single season performances in those categories. He is the first Saint to win a "statistical champion" award from the NCAA since that program was initiated, capturing the award for both goal scoring and power play goals last season. His total of 30 power play goals and a dozen game winners in three seasons are also among the best in Saint program history.

As the only senior returning from last season's first-team All ECAC squad, he is a lock to earn pre-season all league honors for the second straight season. He joins Boston College's Johnny Gaudreau, also a Hobey Baker finalist last year, as the top returning scorers in the east after each posted 51 points a year ago.

Another plus of Carey's return instead of a jump to the professional ranks is the opportunity to play with his brother Matt, who will begin his Saint career this season and is likely to center for his brother. The Careys continue a tradition of brother duos in the Saint program which has included the Flanagans (Kyle and Sean), the Hughes brothers (George and Gunnar), the Raleys (Matt and Pat), and the Kellers (Jared and Derek) over the last five seasons and several more sets of siblings prior to that.

        Thank you.

The reason I asked is that someone posted earlier that those in the SLU student section "...have been known to stand the entire game" - while I applaud and appreciate the enthusiasm a great student presence brings to the college hockey experience, I'm too old to have to stand for an entire game to see past them if I'm in a section close to them. I've purchased tickets in section L, so I'll have a great view of the students (and the game) from across the ice!

I'm looking forward to my first visit to Canton and SLU!

            Go to Ottawa.

There's St. Lawrence Centre in Massena to the north (has a skating rink inside it), and just east of there is the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino if you like placing a few bucks on the turn of a card (you may play with either US or Canadian funds there); it's on the reservation, which is also where you'll find gas you might actually be able to afford. If you like hydroelectric power plants, there's one in Massena. Actually, one of my favorite drives is in that area: NY 12 along the seaway from Alexandria Bay (just north of Watertown) to the northern terminus near Ogdensburg.

I'm a lifelong Cornell fan from a CU family but I just dropped my daughter off @ SLU two weeks ago for her freshman year.(Could not be more proud of her or happy for her!) I am therefore looking forward to hearing some Saints hockey chatter. Saw SLU just twice last year;@ Lynah and vs. Harvard @ Appleton, so I am no expert on the subject but I'd be very interested in hearing what fans are thinking about the 2013-14 season. Obviously losing Flanagan and George Hughes really hurts but I think the future is very exciting. There is a great foundation with Carey, Gunnar Hughes, Weninger, etc. returning and, as has been mentioned previously, the freshman class looks very solid. Especially looking forward to seeing Bayreuther(very smooth - high skill D-man) in action as well as Ward(prolific point producer). These two should contribute right away. Woody Hudson will create space for the skill guys to operate and the younger Carey should step right in. The coaching staff has done a terrific job in taking over for a coaching legend; not an easy thing to do. They have restocked the cupboards and there should be great depth for the forseeable future. Another real solid class coming in next year(Gicewicz looks like the real deal). Any thoughts on line combinations or "D' pairings? Cannot wait for Carleton on Oct. 5th @ beautiful Appleton Arena! It's great to now have two ECAC teams I can pull for!

thanks a million... I wonder if it is ok to go to Akwesasne Mohawk Casino after seeing an NCAA event... with such a hostile and abusive name for a casino

                  Of course, dammit!

Actually, that casino sponsors the Cornwall Colts.

There are too many (actually three) CU's in the ECAC.

I am assuming you're referring to CUred rather than CUgreen?

Actually, Visitor section should be D, and Student section should be C. Student section runs from just inside blue line all the way down to goal line area.

You need to know about Sergi's Pizza Rolls, Josie's Little Pizzeria, McCarthy's Restaurant and Jreck Subs (get the hot peppers). You should take time during daylight to walk around the St. Lawrence campus, which is beautiful and full of interesting architecture. Check out Herring Cole, the Chapel, the Student Center. There are home football and soccer games the weekend Maine is in town. The soccer team is one of the top DIII teams in the country. Check out the SLU bookstore. There is a great Frederick Remington Museum 20 minutes away in Ogdensburg. You've got the Lake Placid Olympic venues 90 minutes to the Southeast. Or, you could just go to Montreal.

McCarthy's has been closed for quite a while now. It's actually a funeral home now so you probably won't want to go there to eat.

He was a Canton native. The museum is housed in the Ogdensburg home where Fred's wife lived after he passed. The collection started from her personal effects and artwork she owned.
