'92 Forward Michael Szmatula commits to Northeastern for 2013. Currently 4th in the USHL in scoring. Our recruiting class next year is absolutely loaded.

Ross Olsson, Zach Aston-Reese, John Stevens, Nathan Ferrerio and now Szmatula. A lot of talent there.

Any thoughts on this weekend's series against the UAH Chargers? As a Charger fan my personal take is that Saturday's match will be closer than tonight's. In all series this season the Chargers have improved on Saturdays. Now that may be a changing a 0-10 Friday smackdown to 2-8 on Saturday but an improvement all the same.

I did read the official preview (http://gonu.com/news/2012/11/8/MHKY_1108120927.aspx). This is a first time meeting. I hope UAH survives, not the matches but the D1 Hockey landscape, so that there can be a second (and subsequent) meeting in the future.

Rumor that we picked up D Matt Benning also. He visited with Szmatula.

I'm looking forward to seeing a new team in the barn this weekend, as I've never seen UAH play. Hoping to see improved discipline and all around solid play from the Huskies for a full 60 minutes both nights. Hope you can make it out for the games or at least take advantage of the free HD streaming of the games online.

The games are Saturday and Sunday nights though, just FYI. (A lot of people have Monday off as an observation of Veterans' Day)

It's definitely an encouraging sign to see some younger recruits lined up for the next couple classes as opposed to the 20+ year-olds who have been the majority of our past few recruiting classes. Cronin's recruits were trending younger too before he left. To me (someone without any big internal connections to the recruiting scene, so this is purely speculation) it says that we're either winning recruiting battles over very talented recruits with other schools, or we're just taking more chances on younger players and hoping they pan out. I would love to read what Ryecheers or Roma have to say on these recruits and if any other schools were in on them before we landed them.

Szmatula is now one of the two older (20+) players we have slated to come in next season, the others will all be 18 or 19 when they arrive on St. Botolph St. next fall.

Hopefully we see a good goalie recruit added soon. As of right now, the goalies next year are Witt and Roy. Losing Gillies really hurts there.

Sweet! At least this particular Friday night during the college hockey season will not result in a Chargers loss. I need to celebrate!

Well, I watched tonight in a very empty old barn and to tell you the truth, what was once concern is now grave concern. Forget about the fact that we were playing the worst DIV 1 hockey team in the nation and perhaps the worst I have ever seen. I would think that a top prep school team like Shattuck St. Mary’s or even Avon Old Farms would likely give them a fairly good game, but, let’s face it this program is on life support , it has a new coach and most of the better players form recent years gone bye have left for greener pastures. To that extent I support the concept of at least one DIV 1 program South of the Mason-Dixon line. To their credit UAB, has a strong goalie and the Chargers never gave up in a contest in which they were out shot 50 to 20. Although, if the object in hockey was to shoot point blank shots into the opposing goalies pads, Northeastern would be ranked # 1 in the nation and would have 3 lines of NHL draft picks.

We won 3 nothing, and were really never tested in a shut out for our jolly green giant, Chris Rawlings, who stopped 20 low quality shots, most of which were taken from behind the blue line. To a layman, this contest may have seemed like a nice win, however to a hockey connoisseur, it was a showcase of the teams glaring deficiencies, lack of offensive punch, hapless Power Play and woeful transition game. Often , in a non conference trap game like tonights, teams play to the level of the competition and that was not really the case here, as our Huskies skated circles around UAH. However, they looked hapless, with little or no offensive promise and are yet again a certain bottom feeder of this league and will likely have to battle hard for a spot in the HE tournament. I am also not convinced yet the JM has any clue what he is doing as by this tenure in his career at least Cronin had set up a boxing rink and heavy bag in the basement at Matthews, to give us some insights into his insanity. I gave back my tix for tomorrow night as watching a scrum on ice really just isn’t my bag.

UMASS and UVM are going to probably defend their home ice against us. i would not be surprised if Maine does too. The forwards, which were supposed to be deep and the best part of this team have stunk up the joint. The goalies, all of them run hot and cold from shot to shot. The defense which was supposed to be the weak point has actually been stronger then most expected, and that is with just 5 guys playing minutes back there. The coaching? Do not get me started at how worthless the three of them have been for the past 15 or so months in charge. I could deal with the team stinking up the joint on special teams, that carried over from the previous staff, but slowly but surely they are starting to lose it at even strength too. We could at least count on the team winning puck battles, winning along the boards, winning at 5 on 5. Well, not anymore. And lets be honest, the defense is going to fall down sooner rather then later. They are playing way WAY above their heads right now.

This team is sunk at this point. IF they can manage more then 5 league wins from here on out, they maybe, MAYBE can scratch out 8th place. But almost a third way through the conference schedule, and 5 points out of a possible 14, done. Stick a fork in them.

Fast start indeed Jim! But, ya know. Keep blaming the league for scheduling us only regular season games in October. And blame Roby for the conflict with Cronin and his idiot hiring. Don't blame the guy actually coaching (at least attempting to) the squad.

IF there is one thing to take out of Jim's tenure so far, is that he is not afraid to bench/suspend guys. So he has that going for him.

OMG YOU ARE SO RIGHT! This team is not going to win 10 HE games. I figure now even Bentley will be difficult

Rossi.. 'some' decent points.. but you are overly pessimistic. One too many beers..

I think the one glaring deficiency is team chemistry - i give you that.

We have to start playing with chemistry. JM, no question, is trying to figure that one out. Hopefully lines click sooner rather than later. The one concern i personally have is team discipline. (it let us down in the UNH & Merrimack gms). We have to clamp down on the soft/ retaliation type penalties.

Regading tonight, give credit to Alabama.. they hung in. Their goalie made some amazing saves & they never quit.

The one postive from tonight (from the wknd actually).. the jerseys & socks.. very very good job by NU Athletics!
G'luck to us Sunday, hopefully back to even record & looking forward not backwards by this time tomorrow. Go Huskies
                            GO NU HOCKEY
                            Always bullish on the future.
We don't always win Hockey East or the Beanpot (#trilogy).. but when we do.. we are the Champions

Would last nights effort win a game, or even a period in a Hockey East game? No. I will assume it had to do with the team they were up against. I am debating going in to watch another scrimmage again tonight when I can do it from the comfort of my home with some good football games on the tv at the same time.

Still waiting on the junior and the seniors to do something this year. Way to much talent up front to not hit 5 goals and get me my free fries last night. I am beginning to wonder if during practice, they keep the goalies out of the net and just let the forwards shoot into empty ones, because every shot is square into the chest of the opposing goalie. In fact, outside of Pimm's goal last night, both of Karlsson's look like they went off the goalie, hard for me to tell, the shots were on the other side of the ice, but shots I thought their goalie could have gotten, though not dissing the kid, he was easily the best player on the ice last night, and if we had him, we maybe undefeated on the season still.

Credit to Rawlings, not asked to do much, but he did what he does best, save what he sees. Unless the other team has a sniper, or our defense blocks his view, he plays fine. I am interested to see if they come back with him tonight, or go back to Mountain to keep him fresh in case they want him/need him next week.

I wonder why these games were even put on the schedule? Where we supposed to have a bye week like UML had last week, and then since UAH was going to drop the program but then did not, we decided to schedule them? Its going to hurt us next week when we have to play teams that can at least match up physically with us, if not skill wise too.

We got lucky this week that their were some good results for us in the league. Last week while really hurts, did not kill us due to what happened elsewhere. Maximum points are going to be needed next week though, and coming off a week like this, hopefully they can bring back some kind of intensity level which was supposed to a JM speciality not seen so far for a full game this year.
