  • Summer Tournaments

Our Midwest summer team is considering a trip out East for a competitive tournament that would of course have college scouts for exposure. The core of the team has been together for the past four summers now and the girls do well. Though not exactly East, would be just as interested in Toronto, Ottawa, Sudbury, CA or places in PA as well.

Any suggestions and background info would be good. Need to get some idea of costs to present to the parents. Considering bus transport but that is one heck of a ride. We have played, Ottawa, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, and I think a Vancouver team that visited the Midwest to play.

Beantown in late July, Boston. Best summer event IMHO. Is that out East enough for you?

Agree that Beantown is the way to go. Answer was Chowder Cup up until last year, but pretty much all the good teams have moved over to the Beantown this year - there will be WAY more college coaches there. Better hurry - this tournament was full (or close to it) by this time last year.

Another option (but tougher to get into) is the NAHA Labor Day tournament. High level of hockey. Every Eastern school and many Western coaches will be there.

Chowder Cup is always the best. Well run, inexpensive and great exposure. Sure, parents pay a gate fee and the games are at multiple rinks, but isn't that all part of the fun? Another good one is the Rochester Melt the Ice event in August. I've heard good things about it from Canadians no less.

Beantown. Nothing against Chowder, but Kelly K. with his Rush Hockey element has built a better mouse trap. One location, six rinks, I believe cheaper team fees (not sure though) and no gate fees. The multiple rinks in one location alone makes it better for college exposure. Plus the better family Italian restaurant nearby in Linguine's!
