  • Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

John Maranatto resigns as Big East commissioner, most likely pushed out by the presidents of the football schools. Is this the great schism we have been waiting for? Football vs. non-football schools? If not, are Louisville and Cincinnati gone? If so, should we expect UConn to remain somewhat neutral in this situation due to the HE application? What other shoes are waiting to fall? The situation becomes more fluid and murky at the same time.

In general, the membership status of a given organization is going to depend highly on the needs of the organization, and the decision on what members have which membership status is put to a vote of the voting membership (and by-laws concerning who may have what membership status are in the by-laws somewhere) at the time a new member is voted in.

Prior to the formation of women's Hockey East in 2002-03, there would have only been men's members (the most recent member at that time to join was UMass-Amherst, who started play in 1994), and therefore there would have been no need for a membership status to be anything but full.

In order to get a sixth team, they would have had to invite from a group including, at the time, UConn, Quinnipiac or Niagara (the other three ECAC partners of the five HEA women's programs at the time: BC, UNH, Maine, Providence, and Northeastern), and inviting that team in as a full member would have entitled their men's team to join as well (since that's what full membership means, in general - the member is accorded the same rights and privileges as any other; playing part of a common scheduling and postseason alliance would be, in the case of an athletic conference, one of those privileges). So to avoid having to do this, UConn was invited as an associate member (and had Hockey East waited a few years to start a women's league, they would have had both UVM (joining from ECAC) and BU (elevating from club) come in at the same time in 2005-06, and would not have needed UConn as an associate member at all). It's very possible that associate membership was defined at the same time in the by-laws as the women's league, and UConn's entry, to explain their lesser status 'constitutionally'.

It's the same principle by which any future Big Ten team would be entitled to membership in the Big Ten hockey league should they start a team; you cannot reasonably deny them the full rights of membership if they already are full members.

Strikes me as sexist, that's all. Men's teams don't need a women's team to be a full member of the conference, but women's teams need a men's team?

Sexism is a red herring. The University of Connecticut is the member, not the University of Connecticut's varsity women's ice hockey team. The institution has associate membership because they were only admitted with the privilege to compete in women's ice hockey. It would have been the same had the offer instead been to participate in Hockey East for their new men's roller hockey league; full membership would have entitled the University of Connecticut to also emplace its men's ice hockey team there.

So, does that mean that Merrimack is an associate member? How about Lowell?

No, not at all. Is Michigan an associate member of the Big Ten because it doesn't have a women's hockey team?

"Bertagna says while there have been casual conversations with other schools, the league's talks with UConn are the most serious."

Just curious who the "other schools" may have been. HC? RPI?

Knowing Bertagna, I'm betting on "Doesn't Exist University" and "Imaginary College."

A short piece on NBC30 Sports tonight as well, probably based on the ESPN piece.

Yukon should probably launch a lawsuit. You know, it's worked out so well for them in the past and all.

Don't be bitter. Btw, although CT joined in the suit you are referring to, it was filed by Pitt. Completely ruined Pitt's chances of joining the ACC didn't it?
